AGS Newsletter for December 2024

Please fill out the sign up form to the right to perform at our January 4th AGS meeting. We will try to confirm your request within about 48 hours. Please follow the guidelines as spelled out below.

The program for all AGS meetings is limited to 90 minutes. The sign up period for our January 4th meeting ends the Wednesday before our January 4th meeting.  Note, your total program should be no longer than 15 minutes. If you have any questions, need to cancel your request to perform, or make an exception, please contact Michael Camp at (818) 793-8176 or email him at michael_ags@yahoo.com.

Your signup will usually be confirmed to you via email reply within 48 hours of your submission of this sign-up form.

When filling in the form, don’t forget to push the SEND button and please be specific: please give full names of works and movements (if any). If available, add opus numbers. Use the prefix trans. for transcriber (trans. John Doe). Accent marks are optional; however, mobile phone users can view accent marks on their keyboard by holding the letter to be accented.

Only items listed with an asterisk * on the entry form are requiredA piece with one or more movements is considered one selection. List multiple short pieces by the same composer, like etudes, preludes, etc., as one selection. If you are playing more than 3 short pieces by various composers, use a combination of entry forms that equal the number of your selections.

For ensembles, list name of group, if any, in the Performer(s) box. Example: Mendocino Guitar Duo, Brian Palmer and Oscar Lewis. For mixed duets, trio, quartets, etc., list performers and instruments. Example: John Doe, guitar, Alice Smith, piano, Janet Jones, voice, etc.

Finally, AGS needs to know the total length of your performance in minutes to ensure that the meeting ends at a reasonable time. Please be careful to state your playing time correctly. Sign up early to ensure your place on the program as the program can fill up very quickly. Note, if there is a conflict due to our scholarship programs, preference will be given to the scholarship participants.

If you wish to modify your previously submitted program or make corrections, re submit this form with a comment indicating this in the Message box. Also, using the Message box, you can list the maker of your guitar or unusual guitar tuning or make a dedication. Examples: Guitar: Ramirez, and/or Tuning: 5=G, 6=C, and/or Valse Lento is dedicated to...,etc.

And here is something new to use the Message box for. The Achuff Challenge Incentive is now in effect. This means that in each month, the 1st performer or group to sign up to play a piece from the AGS VOB Library of 20 booklets of music will receive a $20 cash incentive gift from AGS. Just state in the Message box that a piece you are performing qualifies under the Achuff Challenge Incentive. (Click here for info.) This Challenge Incentive is meant to help our players and audience be aware of the marvelous pieces of guitar music that VOB created for her students and AGS members to perform from. (See the AGS Library tab and download some great classical music scores!)

AGS Special Meetings

In May of each year, AGS awards the Denner Scholarship to local college students of the classical guitar. AGS invites these Denner award recipients to perform their favorite guitar piece at the May AGS monthly meeting. AGS always delights in hearing and seeing the youth learn the traditions and repertoires of the classical guitar. See our Denner Scholarship Tab for more information on this.

In November of each year, AGS conducts our annual Vahdah Olcott Bickford Competition Event. Eight classical students of ages 8-13 (Junior Division,) and eight students of ages 13 - 18 (Senior Division) sign up to participate and compete for a cash prize. Judges are professors from the local area. This meeting is reserved for competition participants only. The audience is generally filled to capacity and all enjoy hearing these students bring forth their finest efforts on the classical guitar.

In January of each year, AGS often selects a gifted member, or a local professional guitarist to provide what we call a “showcase” performance. The artist is given the 2nd half of the program, generally, 45 minutes, to perform their favorite pieces for the audience. The 1st half of the program is provided by AGS members who have signed up via the normal methods.

AGS takes a summer sabbatical each year meaning that there are no July and August meetings. All other months we welcome AGS members (or prospective members) to sign up and perform at an AGS meeting.
